Application : Aquacultural research

As part of its Inland Water Resources program, the French public agricultural and environmental research institute Cemagref and its Center for Experimental Aquacultural Research (CREA), located at Saint-Seurin-sur-l'Isle, specialize in re-establishing the European sturgeon - the indigenous species Acipenser Sturio.

The aim is to produce juveniles for restocking purposes, for a period of 10 to 15 years. Because the sturgeon is a vulnerable fish, it is vital all over this period to keep the quality parameters of the basin water - salinity, temperature, oxygen, and pH - within correct values.

With these long-term requirements in mind, Cemagref opted for remote monitoring facilities and selected SOFREL S50 RTUs with remote I/O modules, which offer the ability to collect field data distributed across an area of more than one hectare. Data are transmitted over the dial-up phone network. This remote monitoring system becomes crucial in case of system failure because of the short response times required: 1 hour for the hatchery and 4 hours for the rearing basins. In particular, users appreciate the flexible setup of the Alarm Reporting feature that allows performing different processing tasks according to the failure severity (sequences, schedules, priority levels, etc).
