Application : Water supply and Sanitation

The company VEOLIA WATER, established in Morocco under the name AMENDIS, has been granted the delegate management of the distribution of drinking water and waste water for the town of TETOUAN. In order to improve remote monitoring and management of the drinking and waste water structures, AMENDIS has decided to implement a remote monitoring and control system. The SOFREL solution has been selected. The equipment was installed and commissioned in 2003.

  • Aims of remote monitoring and control

In accordance with the tender specification drafted by AMENDIS-VEOLIA, the aims of the implemented remote monitoring and control were as follows:

  • To inform the technical staff, in real time, of any malfunctions, for optimum maintenance.
  • To allow the remote control of certain devices (pumps, valves, etc.) according to operating requirements.
  • To optimize structure operation (promotion of off-peak pumping).
  • To collect all network operating data for batch processing and optimization of structure management.

  • The remote monitoring and control system implemented

I/ Remote Terminal Units

  • 30 SOFREL S50 remote terminal units, installed at the various sites (tanks, boreholes, pumping stations, lifting stations, etc.) controlling levels, pressures, pump start-ups / shutdowns, faults (electrical, pumps, etc.), valve controls, etc.
  • 7 SOFREL TELBOX autonomous remote terminal units installed on the inter-urban counters and controlling the counter indices and pressure measurements.

II/ Data warehousing devices

  • 1 SOFREL CS100 teletransmission front-end providing an interface between the various communication media (PSTN, GSM, etc.)
  • 1 LERNE Supervisory master station, VEOLIA WATER remote monitoring and control software that collects data from the various remote terminal units.
  • Les résultats

The remote monitoring and control system implemented by the AMENDIS company uses GSM and PSTN transmissions; this medium is of great value as does not require any specific infrastructure (as would be the case for radio) and, consequently, it considerably reduces installation costs.
Significant savings have also been made thanks to the reduction of travel costs; the operating technicians no longer need to make periodic inspection rounds to check that the structures are operating correctly.
