Roquefort sur Soulzon

Application : Water Supply and Sanitation

The town of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon in the Aveyron, France, includes two villages:

  • Roquefort, dominated by the limestone mountain of Combalou and its natural caves where Roquefort cheese is matured, and
  • Lauras, below, where the employees of the Roquefort caves live.

The town handles water supply, sewerage, household refuse, and the annual delivery of 150,000 m3 of water, including 120,000 m3 to the Roquefort cheese makers. In this context, water of exceptionally high quality is a must!
The town had two primary concerns:

  • Be quickly notified of any failure in water production and distribution; and
  • Reduce the number of inspections the municipal worker had to make - two inspections per day, including during the week-end - to check the state of the primary pump station, the two recovery points, and the leading tanks.

The water system was therefore fitted with meters to monitor variations in daily and seasonal consumption and detect potential leakage. SOFREL Remote Management facilities were also installed with the capability of centralizing data in the town hall via the dial-up phone network, and at the sewage plant for continuously monitoring its operation.

Proven results include:

  • Every morning, the maintenance officer can read all pumping data of the preceding day. If required, he can remotely set the pump triggering thresholds,
  • The week-end inspection has been eliminated and replaced by a simple on-duty service,
  • Several leaks have been detected thanks to night consumption readings.

Remote Management thus offers the town of Roquefort the ability to be quickly alerted and instantly react to any water system failure in order to supply safe and sufficient water in a fragile, preserved natural environment.
