Application : Water Supply and Sanitation

SEMERAP, a joint public/private capital company, provides water supply, sanitation, road, and waste disposal services to the Clermont-Ferrand area.

It employs 100 people and has two operational centers at:

  • St PARDOUX and
  • JOZE.

  • SEMERAP St PARDOUX

The St PARDOUX center handles the local federation of SIOULE and MORGE, with its 53 communities, 1330 kilometers of pipes, 44 works, and 2 production centers. The first remote management facilities installed by LACROIX SOFREL in 1988 fully met all expected requirements. But in 1997 they needed to be modernized to take advantage of new features. The aim of SEMERAP was to monitor the network efficiency on a daily basis and be notified of alarm conditions in real time.

Today, 56 sites are equipped with SOFREL RTUs connected over the dial-up phone network to the PC500 master station, via a CS100 front-end processor. CS100 incorporates a voice card, which allows dialing SEMERAP headquarters, if an alarm occurs during office hours, or notifying the operator on-call after hours.
The Remote Management network enabled SEMERAP St PARDOUX to optimize water distribution by remotely reading meters located in tanks (differential volume adjustment). SOFREL could also demonstrate its strong commitment to continuous product improvement and durability.

  • SEMERAP JOZE

The JOZE center handles the facilities of the local federations of Lower Limagne, Plaine de Riom, and town of Riom, as well as a few auxiliary works and sewers. The total network consists of 73 local communities, 1335 kilometers of pipes, 65 works, and 5 production centers.

Because of this extensivenetwork, it was essential for operators to get information for detecting faulty electromechanical installations and pinpointing abnormal drops in tank levels.
Following on encouraging results in St PARDOUX, SEMERAP JOZE decided to install a SOFREL Remote Management system supplied by the SAEM PAULY company.

Today, 40 sites are equipped with SOFREL RTUs connected over the dial-up phone network to the PC500 master station, which also communicates over dial-up lines with a remote PC located at the Madeleine sewage treatment plant.
Acting as a true analysis tool, the system provides accurate evaluation of the real operating conditions of SEMERAP's network. Access to daily tabular reports gives the ability to quickly detect changes in the system operation and contributes to increased network efficiency without supply interruption for the customer. Finally, the real-time management of alarms helps reorganize maintenance and increases field personnel availability for crucial tasks.

Two tell-tale anecdotes:

  • SEMERAP St PARDOUX - "The monitoring of tank levels revealed an accidental break in the BAYARDS tank".
  • SEMERAP JOZE : "By reading daily water consumption, a leak was detected from an unoccupied country house".
