Metering during the different stages (production, distribution and supply) is essential for the correct management of drinking water conveyance networks.
The volumes of water passing through clearly identified sectors are metered 24/7 by Remote Metering Terminal Units.  These latter regularly communicate with a Telemetry and SCADA Central Station in order to monitor volumes distributed and, in particular, nighttime flowrates. Cross-checked against other network data, the data recorded by the Remote Terminal Units are used to compute network efficiency and Linear Loss Index, in particular.

Metering also allows leaks to be rapidly detected and reduced, thus avoiding two-fold wastage:

• that of the resource, whose availability is occasionally critical,
• that of the electricity required for pumping.
